As I once again attempted to come up with some tennis designs for my husband, Tom, and oldest grandson, Avery...the tennis players of the family...I was trying to draw a little man in a hat playing tennis.

I had just taken care of my youngest grandson, Aidan, age 22 months, and he and I had gone for a walk on a very windy day.  I had put him in his grandfather’s US Open Tennis hat...a bucket style hat...which unfortunately kept blowing off his head...but seeing him in the hat gave me the idea for this little guy.

I tried to draw him with a body and legs...but got frustrated because I could never draw them to my satisfaction...so I finally said phooey and just left the body and legs off completely...thus he became SHORTY.  The first one I drew was the “tennis anyone?” picture.  Well since that time “Shorty” has taken on a life of his own and become a very versatile fellow.

Shorty lives in Florida...Cocoa Beach to be exact.  After reading a book about the explorer Ponce de Leon, he decides that even though he lives there...he’s never really learned enough about his home state.

His adventure will take you all around Florida, from north to south and east to west…places you’ve heard of and some you may not have.  Once again Shorty learns things he didn’t know...and has a grand time learning them!

Shorty loves to learn...and in this book he goes on a learning adventure.  From fishing to tennis...from skydiving to surfing...he learns a lot.

My first complete children’s book.  I had such fun writing the verse that went with these illustrations.   The illustrations were originally drawn simply for fun and to put on t-shirts. ..but once Shorty began participating in so many different sports...he evolved into this wonderful children’s book.
